Do baby teeth matter???
The most common question we as pediatric dentists come across is ‘these are just the baby teeth, and are going to fall off one day, so is it necessary to take good care as the permanent one’s?’
Baby teeth are going to fall off one day but they paly a very important role in oral health of your child. The primary teeth serve 3 purposes-
- They maintain good nutrition by permitting your child to chew properly.
- They are crucial for development of proper speech.
- They help permanent teeth by preserving the space for them.
That’s why you need to keep the baby teeth healthy and happy. Use a soft toothbrush with small head and big handle. Adult toothbrush won’t do. You are going to do the brushing when the teeth have just come in. this will not only ensure that the job is given proper attention, but will give your child a behavior to mirror.
You don’t need a lot of toothpaste, just about size of a pea. Thorough brushing is very important but not to apply much pressure. You need to keep doing the brushing till your child is old enough to effectively brush his/her own teeth. After all a cavity here or there is not a big deal but if the baby teeth is really decayed it may need to be pulled out and that can create issues with the permanent tooth trying to line up to follow it in.
